SYFY Movie Nights At The MARC in February
The Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission(MMVFC) and the Moab Arts and Recreation Center (MARC) are pleased to announce the inaugural SYFY Movie Nights. The films, all from the 1950s, will be shown at the MARC, 111 East 100 North.
HG Wells’ classic, “War of the Worlds,” will kick off the series on Friday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. “Fire Maidens of Outer Space” (1956) will be shown on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, followed by “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1956) on Feb. 21. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for a 7 p.m. start time. The films will be shown free of charge.
Moab Mayor Emily Niehaus said she’s a fan of science fiction and is eagerly looking forward to the film series.
“These films will be a fun way for locals to get out on three Friday nights, see friends, eat popcorn and watch some classic SYFY films,” Niehaus said. “And, they are free!”
Moab Film Commission Director Bega Metzner and MARC Assistant Director Makeda Barkley both expressed strong support for the film series. Metzner was originally approached by town residents Nora Shepard and Richard Codd about the idea for a SYFY film series in Moab.
“I loved it,” Metzner said.
Barkley encouraged Codd to put a proposal together for the event. Codd and his wife, Nora Shepard selected the films. The Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission and Moab City Recreation are sponsoring the film series with the cost of licensing of the movies and providing free popcorn. Codd and Shepard are helping sponsor some of the event costs as well. Codd said he hopes the films are well attended and that SYFY Movie Nights becomes an annual winter event.
