MOAB
— The undefeated San Juan Broncos improved to 8-0 with a convincing
37-7 win over the Grand County Red Devils Friday night. "I was really
pleased with our effort tonight," said San Juan coach Monty Lee. "We've
got so many weapons, and we want everyone to be able to contribute."
Things seemed to go San Juan's way for most of the night, right from
the get-go. IN the fourth period The Red Devils, led by quarterback
Dalton, then launched a desperate drive to avoid a shutout. Dalton finally
broke into the end zone on a 3-yard run as time expired, and added the
extra point for good measure to account for the final tally. Dalton
managed to amass 117 yards rushing on 25 carries, one of the few bright
spots for Grand. San Juan (8-0 overall, 4-0 in region) will face the
South Sevier Rams at Blanding in their regular season finale next Wednesday,
Oct. 15. Meantime, Grand, which dropped to 3-5 overall, 0-4 in region,
will play Millard at Moab that same evening for their final regular
season game.
MOAB — Colorado's
Josh Tostado took advantage of a strong second eight-hour riding stretch
to build a big lead over the field at the 24 Hours of Moab mountain
bike race and cruised to a relatively comfortable victory in the men's
solo division. Tostado was the only cyclist to complete 17 laps in the
solo division and finished the race ahead of legendary endurance cyclist
Tinker Juarez. Juarez, Roan Exelby and Ben Bostrom, who finished third
and fourth, each completed 16 laps. The 24 Hours of Moab is considered
the granddaddy of mountain biking endurance races with more than 2,000
cyclists participating this year. Covering rugged laps of 15 miles over
red rocks, sandstone and treacherous descents, athletes tried to outlast
each other and cover more distance than the field. Defending champion
Chris Eatough pulled out after eight laps with an illness. The top Utah
finisher in the solo division was Sandy's Chad Ambrose, who completed
12 laps — good enough for 18th overall.
